Rolex Explorer 2 Reference 1655 Freccione Orange Hand

$26,250.00

Some vintage watches just have “it”. This is one of those vintage watches. Certainly one of, if not the wildest design to come from Rolex at the time, this one preserves the original funky charm in the form of beautiful blocky and perfectly matching tritium patina, hands, and pristine dial. The “fat” case wears in a uniquely charming way, sitting very nicely on wrist, with long prominent lugs. I like watches like this, perfectly used as they should be, but entirely beautiful all the same.

5.33M Serial number, circa 1977 with correct MK2 Dial.

Case: The distinct original case is very thick and full throughout with its original geometry, profile, and distinct chamfers clearly present. It’s hard to say if it has seen a polish throughout the years or just steady wear, smoothing the brushing on the tops of the lugs, but if it has, it was done very sympathetically as the chamfers are full, thick, even, and consistent through the mid case, as a truly unpolished example would retain. The serial and reference number are crisp and present, without any pitting or corrosion. The correct signed crown screws down and engages as expected.

Movement: Watch is setting, winding, changing date, and keeping excellent time, within +/- 3s per day. Service history is unknown.

Dial: The star of the show is the excellently preserved matte MK2 dial with matching tritium plots and hands. A lot of 1655’s stay white, experience lume loss, or receive replaced dials, and this one is truly excellent. Great, warm, consistent, even, and beautiful patina throughout.

Bracelet: 78360 bracelet with 580 end links and “A” stamped clasp is in nice condition and will fit an approximately 6.75” wrist.

Accessories: none.
