This is the original A. Lange & Sohne LANGEMATIK and it just might be a or the perfect Lange. You get the weight presence, outsized date with quickset pusher at 10, and Lange watchmaking magic from the larger, thicker, more complicated, and more expensive offerings, in an absolute perfect case size of 37 mm by just 9.7 mm thick, with the beautiful, subtle, timeless and super clean aesthetic of the Saxonia line.
It’s the automatic winding micro-rotor with uber-cool zero-reset mechanism movement that everyone wishes was in the current lineup that is the star of the show. With a more visually interesting movement showcasing more finishing techniques and materials than the time only Saxonia or 1815 offerings, the Langematik might just be the goldilocks of the Lange back catalog. No longer in production and offered here with box and papers.

Case: The 37 x 44.8 x 9.7 mm solid white gold case is in excellent condition throughout and appears to be unpolished. Only minor surface swirls are present, as photographed, including one small scratch on the bezel at 9 o’clock which I only noticed upon photographing in the light box. In other words, with the naked eye and even inspecting the case with the a loupe, it never stood out, it’s that minor.
Dial: The matte black dial with applied white gold markers, luminous hands and subtle luminous applied at the cardinal hours is clean and free of any defects. In true Lange fashion the svelte hour markers are mirror polished and faceted so they disappear and pickup light with very subtle changes.
Movement: The Automatic “Sax-O-Mat” caliber L921.4 is the star of the show with a zero-reset mechanism and not-so-micro 21 Karat gold micro-rotor with platinum mass to increase winding efficiency. It’s the gorgeous, thin and technically impressive automatic movement everyone wishes the new and current lineup had and can now only be found in the Langematik Perpetual Calendar. The zero-reset mechanism is so incredibly cool and makes hacking seconds look elementary. Combined with the outsized date and overall thinness, it’s a true gem in Lange’s back catalog.
The watch is winding, setting, changing date, and running smoothly at approximately +4.5 s/d, averaged across 6 positions.
Strap: Presented on its original signed black alligator strap with matching white gold buckle. The strap is in good condition and measures 112 x 75 mm.
Includes: Leather presentation box, user manual, guarantee dated October 2000, and serial embossed cleaning cloth gift.
