The rise in interest and prestige of neo-vintage watches is perhaps no better represented than by the Patek Philippe references 3940 and 3970. Introduced in 1985, the perpetual calendar reference 3940 is hailed for perfectly encapsulating the essence of Patek Philippe combining perfect proportions historically important technical watchmaking with modern practicality, design, and construction. The daily wearer of choice by Philippe Stern the 3940 is the North Star that reestablished the significance of the brand and set the course for the future.
The 3940 seems to be a reference few (if any) can argue with, the design, proportions, size, balance, significance, and sheer beauty perfectly represent why this era and these watches in particular deserve attention and respect. This particular late second series (or third series if you divide production into four total series) is in very nice, honest, and attractive condition throughout.
Reference: 3940J
Case: The 36 x 43.3 x 8.5 mm solid yellow gold case is in very good overall condition with full, even lugs and great proportions. The hallmarks on the 9 o’clock side of the case are visible and defined and indicate the case has been previously lightly polished. The Patek Philippe service sticker remains on the caseback.
Dial: The silver late second series (if you divide production into three series) or third series (if you divide production into four total series) dial dates production to approximately 1989 to 1995 and is in very nice overall condition, clean and free of any major defects. The blued day and month indicators have faded slightly most noticeably near the hand stack. There is a very small mark on the stepped edge of the day subdial near Tuesday that was not noticeable on wrist or naked eye inspection but can be seen in the macro photos. Overall, this dial is very clean, attractive, and honest.
Movement: Housing the venerable caliber 240Q micro rotor and Geneva sealed automatic winding movement that is winding, setting, functioning, and running well at approximately +8 s/d, averaged across 6 positions. The Patek service sticker remains on the caseback and the sale includes a Patek service box, though documentation and service date are unknown.
