Some watches live up to the hype, and this exceptional neo-vintage icon is certainly one of them. The “jumbo” Aquanaut provides more presence and dial versus the smaller 5060 and 5066 while still retaining excellent wearability across a variety of wrist sizes due to the relatively short lug to lug length and great case shape. This present example is offered in honest condition with great tritium dial and hands, strong case, what must be a fully linked bracelet, and the Extract from the Archives confirming it was born on bracelet.
Reference: 5065/1A-001
Case: The 38 x 44.5 x 8 mm stainless steel case is in very good honest condition throughout with full, well defined bezel, and lugs retaining their original facets. The stainless steel case appears to have been lightly polished in the past, but remains very thick, full, even throughout.
Dial: The stunning tritium dial and hands are free from defects and are truly the star of the show, exhibiting so much depth, complexity, and texture lacking in the modern variants. The “grenade” pattern is deep and plays with light and shadows, the bead blasted applied white gold indices add further dimension, creating the illusion the printed signature is floating above the dial. It’s truly one of those watches you can’t stop staring at and you say, “okay, I get it now”, once you’ve spent some time.
Movement: The caliber 315 SC automatic winding movement is Gevena Sealed and winding, setting, and running well at approximately-10 s/d, averaged across 6 positions.
Bracelet: The brick bracelet is really a feat of engineering and needs to be worn to be appreciated. Almost brutalist in design with link facets jutting out as they articulate around the wrist with a completely refined, smooth, and very comfortable feel on the inside. The entirely polished outer surface exhibits surface scratches throughout, commensurate with normal wear. I suspect the bracelet is fully linked as it will fit up to an 8” wrist.
