Patek Philippe Calatrava Ref. 3796R with Extract
The reference 3796 just might be the king or archetype for the neo-vintage category of watches. The same proportions and (largely the same) design as the truly iconic reference 96 updated with a more robust movement, case, sapphire crystal, gaskets, etc. It’s a reference I was always concerned might feel too sterile or modernized compared to the warmth and charm of its vintage inspiration, though I am pleased to report I have not found that to be the case. The wide flat bezel feels potentially more pronounced than the 96, possibly due the flatter sapphire crystal, adding to the overstated presence of the measured case diameter that wears beautifully on wrist. I particularly love the (presumed to be early) examples that retain the smaller serifed signature and accent in the “e” of Geneve.
The reference 3796 has fully captured my heart and quickly became one of those references I’m perpetually seeking out and always want on hand. This particular example has a very good case, excellent bezel, perfectly clean dial, and the subtle warmth of rose gold adding to the vintage aesthetic.
Case: The 30.5 x 38.5 x 6.7 mm solid rose gold case is in very good condition, exhibiting only minor surface scratches throughout as photographed. It appears to be unpolished with sharp case edges, thick, full lugs, and hallmarks crisply intact. The lugs at 2 o’clock and 7 o’clock have minor dings that are not noticeable on wrist but can be seen in the photos provided.
Dial: The subtly brushed very light silver dial is free of any defects and complemented by the applied and faceted rose gold indices, minute markers, and prominent dauphine hands. The serifed and accented signature and sigma Swiss dial lean into the vintage feel.
Movement: The caliber 215 PS manually wound movement is traditionally finished under the closed caseback and proved to be a reliable, robust movement. The watch is winding, setting, and running smoothly at approximately -5 s/d, averaged across 6 positions.
Strap: The watch is presented on matte brown alligator Patek strap with the original rose gold buckle in equally great condition.
Includes: The more charming previous style of Extract from the Archives referencing 1989 production and November 6, 1989 sale.
