Vacheron Constantin Calibre P454/5B Calatrava
Vacheron Constantin Calibre P454/5B Calatrava
It’s often agreed in the vintage watch world that vintage Vacheron Constantin time only watches are some of the most undervalued watches. This watch is the perfect example of that with an 18K solid gold case, a highly refined and well finished JLC derived movement adjusted to hot and cold temperatures, and a raised enamel signature! This is capital “C” Calatrava grade stuff at a fraction of price and more of the charm… just look at this case!
Case: The 34 x 39.5 x 10.5 mm thick case (largely due to the domed acrylic crystal), is solid 18K gold and very thick, full, and even throughout. The rich rosy, iridescent case patina is extremely charming.
Dial: The off-white dial features applied Arabic numerals at the quarter hours and batons in between providing a more sporty, contemporary look that complements the broad lugs for a dress meets field watch twist. The raised enamel early “Vacheron & Constantin” signature and case number suggest the watch was produced in the 1950’s. The dial is very uniform and clean overall with one small spot of dust or stain in between 6 and 7 o’clock.
Movement: This is the perfect example of why the high end of vintage calibers is so impressive. The JLC derived P454/5B manually wound caliber is gorgeous! Featuring cotes de Geneve, anglage, pearlage, black polishing, and a massive swan’s neck regulator, the fact that it’s all hidden behind a closed caseback, intended for the fine craftsmanship only to be appreciated by other watchmakers is just downright fantastic. The watch is winding, setting, and running well at approximately +4.3 s/d averaged across six positions.
Includes: The watch is presented on a dark brown alligator strap in good condition with a nicely matching 18K solid gold unsigned buckle.
